Alternative Therapy

Hands to Paws Animal Massage, Seattle , www.handstopawsanimalmassage.com

Making a Difference with your Companion Animal

The following programs are designed to enable you and your animal companion to contribute to society in a meaningful way. If you have an interest in making visitations to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, or working helping children improve their reading skills, the following programs may be of interest.

Dogs Helping Kids to Read

Children who are hesitant to read to their peers are typically less stressed when reading to dogs. Kids know dogs are never judgmental of their abilities to read. Reading with Rover is a program through which children with reading delays read stories to dogs…and the dogs love listening. The children improve their reading skills in the safe and fun environment the dog creates. Reading sessions usually take place in public schools. Check out www.readingwithrover.com for more information. Or contact Becky Bishop through www.puppymanners.com

Certified Therapy Animal Training

Do you have a Therapy Dog or Cat in the making? The Delta Society's Pet Partners Program trains and screens volunteers and their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities.

The Pet Partners Program was created to ensure that training occurred on “both ends of the leash” and is the only national registry that requires volunteer training and screening of animal/handler teams. The Delta's national network links volunteers with facilities in their own communities that request visiting pets and helps Pet Partners contact facilities to begin visits in new locations. The site: www.deltasociety.org will enable you to find an instructor in your area.

Top Dog Picks

On occasion, we run across a product that our customers need to know about.
Here are our Top Dog Picks for 2009:

DEAM TURF - Synthetic lawn and putting greens; www.Dreamturf.com

The Original All Style, No Stink Dog Collar
These collars are 100% waterproof, won't harbor odor producing bacteria and germs, easy to clean and glides easily over your dog's hair without pulling. You can even attach your Invisible Fence Brand receiver to it. It's great for active water dogs and couch potatoes alike. Check out the list of local retailers who carry this unique product: http://www.dublindog.com/

SLOW DOWN! Bowls
These bowls prevent your dog from eating too fast. The simple obstructions make dogs slow down to eat and reduce the risk of Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV-or "Bloat"). Veterinarian tested and recommended. Works with kibble or wet food.

This product can be purchased through our friend Anna Bolick at www.pawswithnoflaws.com , a local dog trainer committed to personal attention and lasting results.

Wonder WalkerT Body Halter©
The Wonder WalkerT Body Halter© was created to provide pet owners a management tool to control their dogs easily while on leash. It was developed by our friend, Joyce Biethan, a Certified Pet Dog Trainer in the Seattle area, and Mary Dolan, a certified dog lover.
With minimal pressure, the Wonder WalkerT Body Halter© diminishes common pulling behaviors and helps eliminate jumping and lunging while on leash. Walking your dog becomes a pleasure rather than a chore. When used with training young dogs, pulling behavior may be eliminated from the beginning.
Buy one of these at www.joycesdogs.com

Kennel Gear Technology Unleashed
Kennel Gear offers a unique mounting system for food and water bowls in a crate, kennel, and at home. No more water spilling in your dog's crate when you come to an abrupt stop while driving. No more using food dishes as chew toys or play things in the kennel. Because the bowl mounts above the floor, your elderly dog can eat without bending over and the floor is easy to clean. A quick-release mounting bracket, makes removing the bowl as snap. Slide it back in place, and it's once again completely secure. Our customer favorite is the 2-quart stainless water pail for the crate in their car.

You can check out and purchase Kennel GearT in the lobby of Invisible Fence Northwest, Mercer Island.
